ABSTRACT

In the cooperative networks, the partnering strategy of the relay affects the bit-error performance of the network significantly. In this work, we present a new scheme called Hybrid-Decode-and-Forward, which combines the benefits of existing Amplify-and-Forward (AF) and Coded-Cooperation (CC) schemes. We show that the scheme outperforms the existing ones for "bad" inter-user and "good" relay-destination channel topologies, and has similar performance for the other topologies, however removing the feedback necessity between relay and source. Moreover, due to the simplicity of the scheme, multiple relays can be used for cooperation to obtain better error performance in the network. Also, for higher-order modulations, the Hybrid-Decode-and-Forward provides similar performance gains as in BPSK modulation, which makes the scheme applicable to spectral efficient cooperative networks.
