ABSTRACT

We consider fundamental capacity limits and cross-layer design in wireless systems where nodes can cooperate in transmission and reception. We consider both virtual MIMO transmission as well as relaying. We show that the optimal cooperation strategy is cross-layer in nature and depends on the network topology, the channel SNR, and the channel side information available at the nodes. Cross-layer design is also critical for networks constrained in energy and/or delay. We propose a framework for cross-layer design in cooperative systems that leads to significant energy and delay savings. We conclude with a brief discussion on combining cooperative compression and signal processing with cooperative communication.
